Born in Sydney in 1960, Adrienne Gaha lives and works between Australia and the UK. There is a strong element of nostalgia in much of the imagery Gaha produces as she draws on the perception of a more beautiful past or that strange melancholic emotion of longing. This is something that Gaha both embraces and questions in her work. In Gaha’s current practice the artist often starts with a photo that she responds to quite subjectively.
Exploring the attraction to an image through painting, she explores the possibilities of her source material in the process to see how it can give the image meaning, searching for the point where image and paint hover in unison. Gaha’s work is included in numerous public, private and university collections, including the National Gallery of Victoria, Art Gallery of Western Australia, Monash University Museum of Art and the University of Tasmania.
